⭐ TOPIK Must-Know: 결재 vs. 결제

These two words sound almost the same, so they are easy to confuse.

결재 = approval at work

  • 상사에게 결재를 받다
  • 보고서를 결재하다

결제 = payment

  • 카드로 결제하다
  • 온라인으로 결제하다

How can you choose the answer?

Look at the words around the blank.

🏢 회사 · 상사 · 보고서 · 서류 → Think 결재
🏪 카드 · 돈 · 쇼핑 · 주문 → Think 결제

📢 TOPIK Tip: Do not look at only one word. Always check the whole situation.

Who Does the Work?

Another useful pair is 맡기다 and 수행하다.

맡기다 → give a job or task to another person

  • 팀장이 직원에게 중요한 일을 맡겼다.

수행하다 → do the job or task

  • 직원은 맡은 업무를 잘 수행했다.

Think of it like this:

A가 B에게 일을 맡기다 → B가 일을 수행하다

This sentence pattern can help you remember both words together.

Three Words for Working with People

논의하다 · 협의하다 · 협력하다

They may look similar in a TOPIK question.

  • 논의하다 → talk about an idea or problem together
  • 협의하다 → talk together to make a decision
  • 협력하다 → work together for the same goal

Remember the flow:

문제를 논의하다 → 다른 부서와 협의하다 → 함께 협력하다

Learn These TOPIK Word Groups

Try to remember the whole expression, not only one word.

  • 결재를 받다
  • 기한을 지키다
  • 업무를 맡기다
  • 업무를 수행하다
  • 회의에서 논의하다
  • 다른 부서와 협의하다
  • 동료와 협력하다
  • 회사에서 인정받다
  • 승진하다

When these expressions appear in a long TOPIK sentence, you can understand the meaning faster.

🎯 Before You Play Again

Can you answer these four?

  1. You pay by credit card. → 결제
  2. Your manager approves a report. → 결재
  3. You give a task to another employee. → 맡기다
  4. You do the task you received. → 수행하다

If you got even one more answer right than before, you are improving.

Go back to the game and try DAY 8 again.
Your goal is not perfection. Your goal is one more correct answer than last time.

Questions are always welcome in the comments! 🥰 화이팅!

  • 지지하다 means to support a person or idea.
  • 중립 means not taking one side.
  • 보수적 and 진보적 show different ways of thinking about social or political change.

Learn the Words by Situation

You do not need to memorize all 20 words separately. Try putting them into three groups.

1. Creating Art

창작하다 · 응용하다 · 문학 · 음악 · 조각

An artist can 창작하다 a new work.
They can also 응용하다 an old idea or technique in a new way.

2. Seeing and Enjoying Art

전시 · 관람 · 개최되다 · 뮤지컬

An exhibition is 개최되다.
You go there and 관람하다 the exhibition.

3. Talking About Your Reaction

감동하다 · 인상적이다 · 생동감 · 섬세하다 · 조화롭다

These words are useful when you describe what you saw, read, or heard.

Learning vocabulary by situation can help you understand TOPIK passages faster.

⚠️ Do Not Confuse These Words

감동하다 vs. 인상적이다

These two words may look similar, but the feeling is different.

감동하다
→ Your heart or emotions are strongly moved.

  • 영화를 보고 감동했다.
(I was moved by the movie.)

인상적이다
→ Something stays strongly in your memory.

  • 마지막 장면이 인상적이었다.
    (The last scene was memorable.)

전시 vs. 관람

전시 is something that people can go and see.

(A photo exhibition is being held at the art museum.)

관람 is the action of going and seeing it.

  • 주말에 사진전을 관람했다.
(I visited and viewed the photo exhibition on the weekend.)

Think:

전시가 개최되다 → 전시를 관람하다

손꼽다 vs. 손꼽히다

This pair is especially important.

손꼽다
→ Someone considers a person or thing one of the best.

  • 사람들은 이 작품을 최고의 영화로 손꼽는다.

손꼽히다
→ A person or thing is considered one of the best.

  • 이 작품은 최고의 영화로 손꼽힌다.

The meaning is similar, but the sentence structure is different.

TOPIK Study Tip 💡

For TOPIK II, do not memorize only:

  • 개최되다 = be held
  • 관람 = viewing
  • 감동하다 = be moved

Learn the words that often appear together:

  • 전시가 개최되다
  • 공연을 관람하다
  • 작품을 창작하다
  • 기술을 응용하다
  • 감동적인 이야기
  • 인상적인 장면
  • 생동감이 있다
  • 섬세하게 표현하다
  • 최고의 작품으로 손꼽히다

TOPIK questions often give you the situation first and ask you to choose the correct word. If you remember these small word groups, finding the answer becomes much easier.

Can You Remember All 20 Art Words? 🚀

Before you leave, try this:

  • What word means “your heart was deeply moved”?
  • What word means “something stayed strongly in your memory”?
  • And what is the difference between 손꼽다 and 손꼽히다?

If you can answer these questions, you already understand some of the trickiest words from DAY 5. Now go back to the vocabulary game and try again for long-term memory.

Do not worry about getting every answer right the first time. Learn from the words you miss, play again, and build your TOPIK II vocabulary one topic at a time.

See you in DAY 6! 🚀

Learn the Words as a Job Story

Instead of memorizing each word alone, connect the words to one situation:

채용 공고 → 지원하다 → 지원자 → 취직하다 → 경력을 쌓다

A company announces a 채용.
You 지원하다 and become a 지원자.
If the company chooses you, you 취직하다.
After working for some time, you have more 경력.

This kind of connection can help you remember TOPIK vocabulary for a longer time.

⚠️ Words You Should Not Confuse

검사 and 기사 has more than one meaning.

  • 검사 can mean prosecutor (a job in law). But the same word also means a test or an inspection (검사하다).
  • 기사 can mean driver (for example, a bus or taxi driver). But the same word can also mean a news article, or a technical engineer.

In this lesson, 기사 means a driver, as in 택시 기사 or 버스 기사. Always check the words around it.

  • 지원하다 can also mean “to support.”
  • 회사에 지원하다 = to apply to a company
  • 학생을 지원하다 = to support a student

Also remember:

  • 퇴사하다 → You decide to leave your company.
  • 실직하다 → You lose your job.

Understanding the situation is more important than memorizing only the English meaning.

💡Key Exam Tip for TOPIK II Jobs Vocabulary

In the TOPIK II listening and reading sections, jobs vocabulary frequently appears in recruitment announcements, interviews, and workplace stories. Pay close attention to verbs related to employment—such as 지원하다 (to apply), 채용하다 (to hire), and 퇴사하다 (to quit)—as well as nouns like 경력 (work experience) and 전문성 (expertise). Understanding how these words function in sentence contexts will help you answer questions with confidence.

TOPIK Study Tip 💡

TOPIK II often tests vocabulary inside a sentence or a longer passage. You may know the English meaning but still choose the wrong answer if you do not know how the word is used.

When you study a new word, remember one common expression with it:

경력을 쌓다 · 직장을 구하다 · 업무를 담당하다 · 전문성을 갖추다 · 채용 공고 · 회사에 지원하다

Learning words in these small groups will make TOPIK reading much easier.

Learn Similar Words Together

Some appearance words have similar meanings. Learning them together can make them much easier to remember.

건장하다 → 튼튼하다 : Both can describe a strong and healthy body.

곱다 → 아름답다 : Both can mean “beautiful,” but 곱다 is often used for beautiful colors, skin, sounds, or a gentle appearance.

단정하다 → 깔끔하다 : Both describe a neat appearance.

겉보기 → 겉모습 : Both are related to how someone or something looks from the outside.

복장 → 옷차림 : Both describe the clothes a person is wearing.

사이즈 → 크기 : Both tell us how big or small something is.

생김새 → 외모 : Both can describe how a person looks.

⚠️ Do Not Confuse These Words

똑같다 vs. 비슷하다

똑같다 means there is almost no difference.

  • 두 가방의 모양이 똑같다.
(The two bags look exactly the same.)

비슷하다 means they are almost the same, but there may be some differences.

  • 두 가방의 모양이 비슷하다.
    (The two bags look similar.)

This difference is important in TOPIK questions.

복장 vs. 스타일

복장 means the clothes a person is wearing, especially in a certain situation.

회사 복장 / 작업 복장 / 면접 복장

스타일 is more about a person’s own way of dressing or looking.

자신만의 스타일 / 독특한 스타일

단정하다 · 세련되다 · 화려하다

These words can all describe appearance, but they are not the same.

단정하다 → clean and neat
세련되다 → stylish and modern
화려하다 → bright, colorful, or highly decorated

TOPIK Vocabulary Tip 💡

Do not study only: 단정하다 = neat

Study a short expression too:

  • 단정하게 입다
  • 세련된 디자인
  • 화려한 옷
  • 유행을 따르다
  • 안전띠를 착용하다
  • 옷을 갈아입다

TOPIK II usually shows vocabulary inside a sentence or passage. If you learn the words that are commonly used together, you can understand the meaning more quickly.

💡 Key Exam Tip for TOPIK II Appearance Vocabulary

In the TOPIK II listening and reading passages, appearance words are frequently used in descriptive contexts, personal profiles, and fashion or lifestyle questions. Pay close attention to action verbs used with clothing and accessories—such as 갈아입다 (to change clothes) or 착용하다 (to wear/put on)—as well as descriptive adjectives like 세련되다 (stylish) and 단정하다 (neat). Recognizing these nuances will help you answer reading comprehension questions much faster.

Ready to Try the Game Again? 🚀

Which words were difficult for you?

Was it 똑같다 vs. 비슷하다?
Or 복장 vs. 스타일?

Go back to the game and try DAY 3 one more time. This time, do not only remember the English meaning. Think about the situation and the words that are often used together.

A few minutes of review can make a big difference.

Keep going—one topic a day, one step closer to your TOPIK goal!

Learn the Words Together

Some words are easier when you learn them as one situation.

For example:

약속을 하다 → 연락하다 → 만나다

You make a 약속, contact your friend, and then 만나다.

But sometimes your plan changes.

  • 약속을 미루다 → You will meet later.
  • 약속을 취소하다 → You will not meet.

This difference is important.

Words That Look Similar

돕다 vs. 도와주다

Both mean “to help.”

돕다 is the basic verb.

  • 친구를 돕다

도와주다 has the feeling of doing something for another person.

  • 숙제를 도와주다

In many daily situations, Koreans often use 도와주다.

방문 vs. 찾아가다

방문 is a noun.

  • 학교를 방문하다
  • 한국 방문

찾아가다 is a verb. It means going directly to see a person or place.

  • 친구의 집을 찾아가다

TOPIK Study Tip 💡

Try to remember words in small groups:

  • 메일을 보내다 → 답장을 받다
  • 소식을 듣다 → 연락하다
  • 초대를 받다 → 집들이에 가다
  • 약속을 하다 → 약속을 미루다 → 약속을 취소하다
  • 손님을 맞이하다 → 친구를 배웅하다

TOPIK II often tests words inside a situation. If you know which words are used together, the answer becomes easier to find.

💡 Key Exam Tip for TOPIK II Relationship Vocabulary

In the TOPIK II listening and reading sections, relationship words often appear in daily conversations, formal announcements, and story-based passages. Pay close attention to honorific forms and nuanced verbs such as 맞이하다 (to greet) or 배웅하다 (to send off), as they frequently indicate the specific relationship between speakers.

Keep Practicing for Your TOPIK II Exam! Mastering Relationship Words is essential for getting a high score on the TOPIK II test. Review these vocabulary words daily and test your skills with our interactive word game above.

Why Does Korean “Hello” Have a Question Mark? (1 Secret)

Korean Hello
📌 한국어가 쉬워요? 여기를 보세요.👉 [한국어 blog]

Hello? Bonjour? Hola? 你好? السلام عليكم? नमस्ते? Здравствуйте?

Does the greeting in your language have a question in it? How do you say Hello in Korean?

You say “안녕하세요?” (an-nyeong-ha-se-yo?), right?

But look closely — there is a question mark (?) at the end. Open any Korean textbook, and it is always there.

Korean Hello

So why does the “Korean Hello” sound like a question? Let me tell you a little story.

What does Korean Hello “안녕?” really mean?

When learning Korean Hello “안녕(an-nyeong)?“, Most students never even notice this little question mark — but once you do, the first question is simple: what does “안녕” actually mean?

안녕 (安寧)” comes from Chinese characters. A long time ago, before King Sejong created Hangul, Korean people spoke Korean but wrote with Chinese characters. Even today, many Korean words still come from them. (We’ll talk more about this in another story.)

They mean a state of being calm and safe, with nothing wrong.” In English, it is close to “peace or well-being“.

So if we translate “안녕하세요?” word by word, it sounds like this:

“Are you at peace? Are you doing well, with nothing wrong?”

Is it the same as “How are you?” then? Almost.

In Korean, “How are you?” is usually “잘 지내세요?” (jal- ji-nae-se-yo?).

When you add a “question mark(?)” to the greeting “안녕하세요”, it becomes a soft way of asking about someone. If you really want to ask how they are, you write “안녕하세요?“. If it is just a light hello, you write “안녕하세요.

And honestly, when you speak, the sound matters more than the mark. Raise your voice a little at the end, and it feels like a question. Keep it flat, and it feels like a greeting.

Wait — Why do Korean keep asking about my life?

When you come to Korea, you will hear these too:

“밥 먹었어요?” (bap meo-geos-seo-yo?)Did you eat?

“어디 가세요?” (eo-di ga-se-yo?)Where are you going?

At first, this can feel strange.

Why do they want to know if I ate, or where I am going?”

But Korean people are not really trying to look into your private life. These are like cousins of “안녕하세요?”.

It is closer to a warm “You doing okay? Nothing wrong?”

Why do Koreans ask if you are okay?

Here comes the old story.

Long ago in Korea, neighbors lived close together and helped each other. They farmed together, and they got through hard times together.

Because of where Korea sits on the map, it was invaded by other countries many times through history. So there were many poor and hungry years. In times of war, or when people were dying of hunger, the first thing you wondered each morning was simple: Is my neighbor safe? Did anything bad happen in the night?

So when people met, they greeted each other like this:

“Are you at peace? Are you doing well?”
“You are not going hungry, are you?”

In years when many people were hungry, “밥 먹었어요? (Did you eat?)” really meant “Are you okay? Did you get enough to eat?” That caring feeling still lives inside today’s “안녕하세요?”.

Of course, this is not a proven history. But when you think of it this way, doesn’t a simple daily greeting start to feel a little warmer?

So remember just one thing: in Korean, a question-shaped greeting is not really asking for information. It is a way to start a conversation and to check in with each other.

How do I know what these greetings really mean?

It depends on the situation. Take “밥 먹었어? (Did you eat?)”:

  • From an adult or a friend you have not seen in a while → it means How have you been?”
  • Right before a meal time → it might mean “Want to eat together?”
  • After a meal time → it might really be asking if you ate

You can answer simply.

“네, 먹었어요. (Yes, I ate.)” or “아직요. ○○ 씨는요? (Not yet. How about you?)” is enough.

어디 가세요? (Where are you going?)” works the same way.

If you do not want to explain, you can just say “잠깐 볼일 보러 가요. (I’m just going out for a bit.)”

And “안녕하세요?” can feel like “How are you?”, but most of the time you do not need a long answer.

Just saying “안녕하세요?” back is perfect.

Who do I say it to?

When using Korean Hello in daily life, greetings have different levels of politeness.

They change a little depending on who you are talking to.

  • 안녕? (an-nyeong?) → a close friend, a child, or someone you already speak casually with
  • 안녕하세요? (an-nyeong-ha-se-yo?) → someone you just met, and most everyday situations (the safest choice)
  • 안녕하십니까? (an-nyeong-ha-sim-ni-kka?) → very formal places, like a presentation, an interview, or an official event

Remember one thing. With a child, “안녕?” feels natural.

But with an adult who looks a little younger than you, or with someone you just met, “안녕하세요?” is the safe choice — no matter their age.

The key is not age. It is your relationship.

One last thing

“안녕하세요?” is not just “Hello”. Inside it is an old, kind wish: I hope you are doing well.

So next time you greet someone with “안녕하세요?“, remember this little story. You are greeting them in a very old way, quietly saying:

“I hope you’re doing well today.”

Does “안녕하세요?” make a little more sense now?

So when you meet a Korean person on the street, let’s greet them properly — not just “안녕”, but “안녕하세요?

Does your language have a greeting that looks like a question? Tell me in the comments. I would love to know.🥰

See you again!

Sino-Korean Numbers 101: Mastering Price Expressions

Sino-Korean Numbers

‘Sino-Korean Numbers (일, 이, 삼, 사…)‘ are essential for daily life in Korea and for visiting Korea’s charming traditional markets.

Korean has two ways to count numbers, so many learners find it a bit confusing at first. But don’t worry! Today’s lesson is on Sino-Korean numbers, which are very useful when talking about prices, dates, phone numbers, and floor levels.

Once you master this, you will be able to confidently ask and answer prices when you find an outfit or shoes you love in a traditional market! Let’s get started, shall we?

1. Meaning & Function of Sino-Korean Numbers

The Korean number system is largely divided into ‘Sino-Korean Numbers’ and ‘Native Korean Numbers’. The Sino-Korean numbers (일, 이, 삼, 사…) we are learning today are mainly used in the following situations:

🌟 Key Point for Shopping! 물건의 가격을 말할 때는 꼭 한자어 수(일, 이, 삼, 사)로 말하세요~! When you ask for the price of an item in a market, you must use ‘Sino-Korean Numbers’.
